That’s code. That’s erasure dressed up in industry speak. That’s a lazy excuse for fear, bias, and an unwillingness to invest in stories that don’t fit a narrow mold.

🚫 "Unmarketable" Is a Lie


What does “unmarketable” really mean?

  • Too Black?

In traditional publishing, “unmarketable” often translates to unfamiliar to the imagined white reader. If your story doesn’t center whiteness, tragedy, or redemption-by-privilege, it gets passed over.


But let’s be honest: those old blueprints are tired. Readers—real readers—want stories that breathe. Stories that feel lived in. Stories that aren’t sanitized for comfort.

Traditional publishers will spend six figures on the same tired tropes but balk at the price of promoting a nuanced Black narrative. They’ll pass on your book and then release a knockoff version 18 months later—written by someone with proximity to power but none to the experience.


The industry will try to convince you that your story won’t sell, then go profit off your culture in the next season’s catalog.

Don’t believe the hype.
